GLASGOW FOLKLORE (2014-15)

I am drawn to the ambiguous rituals whose origins are lost over time. The fact that these ceremonies are still apparent in our lives today fascinates me; no longer useful nor fundamental to certain belief systems, they have not been discarded. Have we held on to them as a desire for sentimentality or is it just the ritualistic nature of human beings?

Captivated by festivity and celebration, my work attempts to recreate these levels of exuberance. Using folklore as main points of reference I re-imagine existing traditions by transforming them into open parodies. Once I subvert them as artworks they return humorously to the viewer, questioning both anthropological ideas of tradition, but also creating a commentary on gender, taste and the absurd.
